About us


SPEED Trust (Slum People Education and Economic Development) is a Charitable Public Trust which acts in the slum areas of Chennai, the fourth largest city of India and capital city of Tamil Nadu . Officially created in 2003, SPEED Trust is prolonging an action undertaken by the former SPEED Association in 2000. The organization’s programs , which lay a particular stress on education, responsibility and self-confidence, are directed towards improvement of the slum-dwellers’ situation. 

Slum People Education and Economic Development Trust is registered under charitable Trust act intervening in one of the largest slum of Chennai (opposite Central Railways Station) in the cause of Education and Economic Development of the underprivileged society. Located right at the heart of Chennai Metropolis, Opp. Central station off Pallavan Salai exist a largest 2600 families comprising 19000 people who are mostly migrants from neighboring states. This population comes most of the time from rural areas they left because of drought or cataclysmic monsoon. Most of the men (and sometimes with their spouse) are working as casual laborers in building areas; others are cycle-rickshaw drivers. A lot of women, almost isolated women are employed as housemaid for monthly wages not exceeding Rs.2000, 5% of these families, mainly single parental live in the deepest poverty, which lead them to drop their children out of the school and make them work at home or taking care of their younger siblings. More than half of the adults are illiterates. 

SPEED – Slum People Education & Economic Development – is an Indian Organization, registered under No 589/2003 the Charitable Trusts Act, and approved u/s 12AA & 80G of ITA-1961.
